Saturday's Grand
Classic Show Day and Awards Banquet, by Grace Gluck
As
beautiful as the two previous days were, Saturday was exactly the
opposite. It was cold and wet. The many people that stayed at the hotel
came down early and new plans were formulated. Formal portraits of the
cars, photographed by Steve Gluck,
assisted by his dad, Bob Gluck
with Norm Arbour
and Frank
Goodhart, were taken in front of
the hotel using the portico for protection from the rain. After the cars
were photographed, our well-planned parking lot plan was scrapped and cars
were parked in the most convenient space with some attempt at keeping the
classes together. Pat Caruso
roamed the field with his camera and took many candids of cars and
people. In spite of the weather, spirits were high and everyone pitched
in to make our show day a grand success. The rain stopped or slowed long
enough to get all the cars judged in the field. The judges, led by
John and BarbaraAnna Kefalonitis,
did a remarkable job of doing their task with 31 cars being judged. The
scores will be printed in the June issue of The Classic Car. From
the 74 cars signed up, close to 50 were on the showfield. It was
certainly a grand showing of beautiful Full Classics®.
And, now we
present the 2006 Metro Grand Classic Show Field

Because of the weather, everyone (spectators, participants and judges) was
in and out of the hotel, creating a great feeling of camaraderie, fun and
laughter. I’m convinced many more people talked and laughed together than
would have on a sunny day. One got the feeling of great friendships
enjoyed even though they only met on that day. The Wyndham Garden Hotel,
where we were the only event, rose to the occasion doing an excellent job
of servicing everyone’s needs from hot coffee to a full meal. The
Hospitality Room, compliments of Bill
Hirsch, did a booming business
all three days of the event, but particularly on Saturday where snacks,
soft drinks, and good conversation were always available.
The
tabulators, led by Karen Story,
performed their job flawlessly, turning in their scores, with the computer
printing out the results. As the day wound down, many of the cars were
back in their trailers and everyone felt the show was a great success. We
now looked forward to the evening’s banquet and awards ceremony.
Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were available to the 108 guests before
dinner was served in the ballroom of the hotel. Laughter was heard at
every table as everyone watched the excellent slide presentation of the
events from the previous three days, put together by Steve Gluck. Along
with the slides, door prizes of wine were drawn throughout the dinner for
the pleasure of the lucky recipients. Then finally, the moment of
reckoning, the judging results. Bob Gluck, director of Metro and John
Kefalonitis, head judge, presented the awards to the many happy car
owners. As the awards were presented, Steve Gluck flashed a picture of
the car receiving the prize to the delight of the enthusiastic audience.
We had two 100-point cars and a number of high point first place winners.
Our hearty congratulations to the winners and to everyone who showed their
car.
Our
show proved the point of a famous CCCA member who said, “the cars bring us
together, but the people keep us together.” That certainly was true this
weekend, where many new friendships were formed and others renewed. Thank
you everyone for making the Metro Region Grand Classic a terrific success!
